FTP, HR & 8-Minute Fitness Diagnostic

Estimate FTP from a defined FTP protocol or capture an 8-minute fitness baseline for capacity, cardiovascular cost, cadence control, and repeatability. The 8-minute diagnostic is not converted into FTP.

Note: Weight is optional and used only for W/kg. Cycling LTHR is optional for FTP mode. In the 8-minute diagnostic, HR, cadence, and VI are optional context fields.

i How to use this tool

1. Start with your exact 8-minute effort

Enter your average power for the full 8:00 interval. When available, also enter average HR, max HR, cadence, VI, weight, current CIS Working FTP™, and cycling LTHR. The more complete the telemetry, the stronger the CIS Logic read.

2. Isolate the measurement window

Do not use the entire workout average when warm-up, recovery, coasting, or cool-down are included. In TrainingPeaks, select or create a lap covering the exact eight-minute effort and use that interval’s metrics.

3. Upload supporting evidence

Upload a TrainingPeaks screenshot, CSV, or TXT file when available. The upload supports verification and context; confirm that the entered numbers represent the correct 8:00 interval.

4. Read the 8-Minute Performance Marker first

The eight-minute average power is the athlete’s demonstrated 8-minute capacity. It is a repeatable fitness marker—not an FTP number. Use it to compare capacity and execution across future tests.

5. Review the projected 20-minute power window

The tool projects a practical longer-effort window from the 8-minute marker. The projection range represents uncertainty. It remains a performance projection unless you explicitly opt to use its midpoint as a provisional power-zone anchor.

6. Review the projected HR response

When average HR is available, the tool creates a provisional 20-minute HR response window. This is a CIS Logic projection, not a measured LTHR and it does not generate HR training zones. Enter a known cycling LTHR to generate HR zones.

7. Review power and HR training zones

The tool builds CIS power zones from an entered Working FTP or from a projection midpoint only after explicit provisional-anchor opt-in. Cycling HR zones require entered LTHR. Projection range = uncertainty; entered rider data outrank projection.

8. Override the projection when stronger data exists

Current FTP, CIS Working FTP™, and cycling LTHR outrank projections. Use the hierarchy: known rider data → demonstrated performance → projection → CIS Logic interpretation. A projection should not silently become prescription.

9. Read the CIS Logic Read

The CIS Logic Read translates telemetry into rider-facing language: what the athlete demonstrated, how well the effort was controlled, what HR and cadence reveal, and what the current operating window means for training.

10. Apply Fix This First™

Fix This First™ identifies the most important execution issue revealed by the test—such as opening too hard, excessive variability, cadence instability, disproportionate cardiovascular cost, or poor repeatability. Focus on the one thing that matters most next.

11. Add Effort 2 when available

Effort 1 is enough for the initial diagnostic. Effort 2 adds repeatability, helping distinguish one-time capacity from repeatable capacity and giving additional context for progression.

12. Generate the athlete EPD

Once the inputs and interpretation are complete, open the Executive Performance Debrief™. The rider-facing report presents the CIS Logic Read, Performance Telemetry, power and HR projections, training zones, and Fix This First™.

System principle: The purpose is not to chase one perfect number. Use the tool to answer: What can the athlete do right now? How are they doing it? What should we prescribe next?

20-minute test: use a hard, evenly paced 20-minute effort; FTP estimate = 95% of average power.
30 or 45–60 minutes: use a sustained, steady effort with minimal coasting or surging.
Ramp/MAP: this CIS estimate uses 75% of the best 1-minute power from the ramp protocol.
Validate: confirm the estimate through Z2 control and repeatable threshold execution before making large changes.
